Advent Week 2

Family on a Mission

Each day take one of these and as a family complete the task. Some days are easy and some days are a bit more challenging. Check them off and try and only do them once.

1.   Write an “I Love You” note to someone and leave it for them to find

2.   Offer to do something for a stranger

3.   Hold the door open for someone

4.   Bake some cookies and give them to a neighbor

5.   Write an encouragement note to a police officer

6.   Take dinner to another family

7.   Help pick up litter

8.   Give out free hugs

9.   Let someone skip ahead of you in line

10.      Leave some change in a vending machine

11.  Introduce yourself to someone new

12.                  Help an elderly person put up their Christmas decorations

13.  Give your waiter a little extra tip

14. Write a letter to a military personnel

15. Donate money to the Salvation Army red kettle

16. Volunteer to ring the bell for Salvation Army red kettle

17.    Deliver homemade cards, children’s books or puzzles to patients on the children’s ward of a hospital

18.    Clean up a playground

19.     Put together some type of care package for your school bus driver

20.   Call a local nursing home and find out who doesn’t have family and is celebrating their birthday that month.  Take them a cake, balloons and a card.

21.    Ask a local nursing home if you can help decorate their bulletin boards

22.    Make activity bags for children who are in the hospital or their parents are in the hospital

23.    Make pen flowers for the nurses station at the local hospitals

24.    Put together a late night care package for fire fighters working the night shift

25.    Get gifts for a child off the angel tree

26.      Volunteer at a food bank

27.    Host a craft night at a nursing home

28.    Send our college students cards

29.    Put together a shoebox for operation Christmas child

30.    Donate diapers and wipes to local women’s shelter

31. Write a thank you note to the janitor at the local schools

32.     Give the cashier at the store a thank you note

33. Babysit for a family while they go shopping

34. Donate food to the local pet shelter

35. Write notes of encouragement in chalk on a friends sidewalk or driveway

36. Take coffee to a homeless shelter

37.    Send a phone card to a person in the military

38.    Take school supplies to a local school to restock their resource closet

39.     Find a need in the neighborhood and fill it

40.    Donate books to a doctors office or hospital waiting room

This Week in Life Works News

This week our theme is Love. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son.” Check out the blog daily for ideas on how to join us in this journey through Advent.

Children who are wanting to participate in the play need to be at our final rehearsal Sunday, December 13th at 9:40. We will go through the entire play. Don’t forget to practice your lines and the songs this week!

On Sunday, December 13 at 3pm we will be going Christmas caroling to some of our shut in and the local nursing home residents. Anyone is welcome to join us as we go and bless others with some Christmas joy. 

Youth will have their annual Christmas extravaganza on Sunday, December 13 after we get back from caroling at 6pm.

We are getting ready for Christmas Eve and still have a few parts that need to be filled. If your child would like to read Scripture or would like to participate in the 4pm Christmas service please let Bekah know this week.

If you haven’t already don’t forget to RSVP for our Polar Express Movie Night! Movie starts at 6pm and we ask that children be picked up by 8pm. Children may come in the pajamas if they would like. We will be serving hot chocolate and popcorn (no meal). All ages are welcome to come! We are waiting, O God, for the day of peace. Give us the will to bring that day through our own simple goodness and hope. Fill us with patient desire, that our work may be holy, and our holiness bright, through the Christ for whose coming we long, and the Spirit in whose presence we live.  Amen.

Tonight we prepare our hearts for tomorrows worship.  We remember that we are hoping for Christs coming again.  Tomorrow we will remember the sacrifice He made for each of us through His death and Resurrection.  Since tomorrow is a day we celebrate Communion here is a fun way to read through the Communion liturgy

May the Lord be with you.
And also with you.

May your hearts be lightened and filled with God’s love!
We lift up our hearts and praise God above.

Let us give thanks to the Lord, God our Father.
We thank God and praise Him – it isn’t a bother!

It is right and good-ful; holy and wonderful; blessed and joyful;
To give thanks to you God, Almighty and faithful.
For it’s you that has given us this worship time,
Filled with laughter, some holy humor and rhyme.
It’s you that has shown us your holy love,
That you have sent from heaven high up above.
And so, with your angels who first sang your song,
We proclaim your goodness by singing along:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven is filled with your marvelous glory;
Earth is filled with your light.
Blessed is he who comes in your name –
“Hosanna on high!” we loudly proclaim.

Holy God, it’s your Son we remember today,
Jesus Christ, the anointed, whom we try to obey.
He encouraged the poor and freed the oppressed,
And taught us that you care about the distressed.
Through his suffering, death, and resurrection,
He taught that Your grace beats out our imperfection.
He ascended to Heaven and sits there beside you,
But still remains with us in all that we do.

On the night he was taken, he lifted some bread,
He blessed it, and broke it, and here’s what he said:
“Dear friends, this is my body to you that I give.
Take it; share it: in you I will live.
From now on, whenever, wherever you meet
Remember our time when this bread here you eat.”

When supper was over, he then took the cup,
With praise and thanksgiving he lifted it up:
“For the New Covenant, this is my blood;
A sign of the Lord’s continuing love.
For God has forgiven your every mistake,
So trust in God’s love when this drink you partake.”
May we offer ourselves for God’s greater glory,
And proclaim what we know of this fabulous story:

Christ Jesus: he died, but then rose again!
He’ll return here on earth: Hallelujah! Amen.

Holy Spirit, come down on us gathered here,
With this bread and this fruit of the vine please appear.
Make holy this food, fill us with your grace,
So we proclaim gospel to the whole human race.
We love you, Lord Jesus, we’ll shout out again
Your glory and honor:

Amen and Amen!

The Nativity Story Bracelet

Long ago in a little town called Nazareth lived Mary (blue bead) and Joseph (green bead). One day the angel Gabriel (white bead) came to Mary and told her that she would have a baby. He would be called Jesus and would be the son of God. Mary was so amazed by what happened. She told her husband-to-be Joseph what the angel had said and after a time she found that she was going to have a baby. When Mary was nearly ready to have her baby King Herod (red bead) said that everyone must go back to where they were born to pay their tax. So Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem on a donkey (orange bead). It was a very long journey and they arrived in Bethlehem at night. Bethlehem was very busy as many people had come back to pay their tax. Mary and Joseph tried lots of inns to find a bed but they were all full. Finally they found an inn where the innkeeper was very kind and said they could stay in a stable (dark green bead). Mary knew the special baby would be born soon. That night baby Jesus (pink bead) was born. To keep him warm they wrapped him in a cloth and laid him in a manger, with the animals lying peacefully around him. The shepherds (brown beads) were up on the hills when they were suddenly blinded by a bright light. It was an angel (small white bead). She told them a special baby had been born and to follow the bright star (yellow bead) in the sky. At the same time 3 wise men (purple bead, small red bead, dark purple bead) also saw the star. They knew a special baby had been born so they also followed the star. When they found the stable the shepherds gave Jesus a lamb (beige beads). And the wise men gave gold, frankincense and myrrh (small yellow bead). As they all gathered around the baby Jesus, the stars twinkled and the angels sang as the animals watched peacefully they all knew this was a very special day.

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
