Lent Devotion

Real Forgiveness

The Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often must I forgive?  As many as seven times?"  Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times."  - Matthew 18: 21-22

Peter wants to know what the limits of forgiveness are.  How far does he have to go in tolerating and reconciling with those who sin against him?  It is tempting to want to say to someone who is irritating us:  "sorry, but you've used up the times that I have to forgive you, get lost!"  But Jesus tells us that since there is no limit to God's forgiveness of us, then we need to forgive others without limits as well.  If anyone would have a good reason to limit forgiveness, it would be God.  Instead, God continues to forgive us far beyond what would be considered "reasonable" and God asks us to do the same with one another.

Forgiveness is difficult, how can we make it easier to do?

God, help us to not keep score in our forgiving one another.
