Lent Devotion

Showing Off

Do whatever the scribes and Pharisees teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach.  They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them.  They do all their deeds to be seen by others. - Matthew 23:3-5

If Jesus sounds harsh as he talks about the important teachers of his time, it is because of the way they acted, not because of what they taught.  He knew that it was easy to "look religious": to go to church and to act piously without letting our hearts be moved by the gospel.  Sometimes we can get more concerned about impressing others than worshipping God.  Instead, Jesus invites us to do things, even little things, to serve God and one another.  It may be as simple as helping to set the table or cleaning up without being asked or just saying a quiet "thank you" or "I love you" when those around us might least expect it.

God, help us to choose our actions to please you, not simply to impress others.
